"The greatest mistake we can make is to stay on the ground after falling."
- Victor Manuel Rivera

Riverview Staff,

Thank you to everyone who was engaged and participated in yesterday's professional development.  Suicide prevention and intruder drills are no one's favorite topics to focus on, yet they are some of the most important topics to be properly prepared to handle if faced with such situations.  *To classified staff members who were not yet on contract, trainings for ALICE and suicide prevention will both be available in an online format for your review and completion. Speaking of safety, you may have noticed that we received tinting on our cafeteria windows so that it is more difficult for anyone to see into the cafeteria during the day.

As we start second semester, allow me to take a quick moment to review some building expectations.  :)

  • To help me stay informed, please copy me in on your weekly/biweekly parent communications (Smore newsletters, emails, etc...).  To respect privacy, parent emails should be listed in the BCC lines.  No parent's email address should be visible to others when mass emails are sent to parents.

  • ALL STAFF must sign in/out of the office if they arrive/leave within the contract day.  If you are itinerant and come in/out of the building during the day, you must sign in/out at the front office.  If you run home during plan or leave early, regardless of your location in the building, please be sure to come up to the front office and sign out before you leave.  This means even if you have quick access to an outside door, you need to sign in/out of the front office.  We must be able to account for all RE staff in case of an emergency.

    • On this point, if you need to leave the building early, or arrive after 8:15 am, please communicate with me in advance if possible.  Classified staff should communicate with their direct supervisor(s).

  • Please remember to keep doors closed/locked when you are in a classroom with students, and closed at all times for temperature regulation purposes.

  • Dress expectations: Mondays are for jeans and a recent Riverview Staff shirt.  Tuesday-Thursday professional dress (=business casual).  Fridays are jeans with any appropriate top.  I have been asked about where leggings fit into this.  As long as your tush is covered and the top is professional (e.g., nothing you bought on spring break that advertises for South Padre Island), leggings can be worn M-F.  :)

  • Finally, please be aware of the following dates from HR...if you have any questions, please contact Carrie Handy at Ext. 3314.

MTSS Update

The district is reviewing, and possibly revising MTSS procedures and resources.  There are two representatives from each building on the committee (Kelly and Amber attend on behalf of RE).  In an effort to keep everyone well informed of this process, please see district communication below:

  • The District MTSS committee is facilitated by T & L staff: Stacey Yurkovich, Ceresa Schaffer, Kristel Fulcher and SpEd staff:  Lee Hanson, Corina Ouellette, Melynda Kaifes

  • Each school has two representatives on the committee: a building leader/teacher and an administrator or SIS. (Please introduce members from your school.)

  • This fall the committee has met twice as a large group.

  • At the first meeting, a summary of the responses gathered from building teams earlier this fall related to MTSS was reviewed.  In addition, the purpose of the committee was defined:  To create a district-wide Multi-Tier System of support for student in USD 232.

The Kansas Definition of MTSS was reviewed and committee members reviewed the Kansas MTSS Innovation Configuration Matrix as it applies to current practices in USD 232.

  • Committee members were asked to indicate a preference and were assigned to one of three subcommittees: math, reading or behavior. (rosters attached)

  • At the second meeting subcommittees began working through an agenda of tasks.

  • During January and February the subcommittees will be meeting to address the topics listed below.  Subcommittees will provide reports after each of their meetings which will be reviewed by the facilitators.

Research and Propose:

  • Membership for building MTSS teams

  • Screening tool to be used for your area

  • Guidelines/Cut scores for identifying students for interventions (tiers)

  • Definition/guidelines for “rapid response”

  • Interventions/resources to address needs of identified students

  • Method for progress monitoring:  tool, frequency

  • Method/frequency for reviewing student data and progress

  • Guidelines for the frequency of tier movement

  • Communication process for parents and students regarding tier placement

  • The next large committee meeting is scheduled for March 9th.

Questions may be referred to Kelly, Amber, or any of the facilitators.
